Korean Raw Beef Guide: How to Eat Yukhoe & Mungtige in Hongdae

🇰🇷 한국어로 보기

Korean raw beef yukhoe and mungtige at RAWISM, Hongdae Yeonnam-dong Seoul

Walking around Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong, you may notice Koreans enjoying raw beef at bars — either lightly seasoned, or sliced plain and dipped in sauce. These are yukhoe and mungtige. "Eating it raw?" many travelers hesitate, but it is actually one of the most honest ways to enjoy the natural sweetness and texture of fresh Hanwoo (Korean beef). This guide explains what they are, how to eat them, whether they are safe, and where to try them in a fun, photo-friendly spot.

# 1. Yukhoe vs Mungtige — what is the difference?

Both are raw Hanwoo beef, but enjoyed differently. Knowing just this much is enough to start.

  • Yukhoe — Korean-style raw beef tartare, lightly seasoned with soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic. Slightly sweet, savory and very approachable for first-timers.
  • Mungtige — thick-cut raw beef eaten plain, dipped in salt or sesame-oil sauce. You taste the beef itself.
  • If it is your first time — start with seasoned yukhoe to warm up, then move on to mungtige.

# 2. How to eat it

No need to be nervous — just follow the order and anyone can enjoy it.

For seasoned yukhoe, break the egg yolk on top and mix it in — the richness comes alive. For mungtige, eat one piece plain first to taste the beef, then lightly dip the next in sesame-oil or salt sauce. Add garlic and chili for a cleaner finish. And the Korean golden rule: one bite of beef, one shot of soju — that is the rhythm.

# 3. Is it safe?

This is the question travelers ask most. The key is freshness.

RAWISM uses only same-day slaughtered (fresh) Hanwoo, prepared quickly and hygienically at low temperature. When fresh raw beef is handled properly, the risk is very low. It is a traditional food enjoyed in Korea for centuries — so go ahead and give it a try.

# 4. A neon photo spot

The vibe is part of the memory, and RAWISM is genuinely photogenic.
